Waxing 101: How to Prep & Care for Your Skin Before and After a Brazilian Wax

If you've ever had a brazilian wax, chances are you've dealt with ingrown hairs or found a few pesky stragglers hanging around aftward. Why does this happen? and more importantly how do you prevent it?

If this is your first ever Brazilian you're in the right place. Lets start you off on the right foot so you can get that smooth, flawless peach (and keep it that way).

Why Regular Waxing a Game Changer

There are plenty of perks to keeping up with your waxing routine:

  • Longer lasting results- unlike shaving, waxing removes the hair from the root, keeping you smoother for weeks.

  • Finer, softer regrowth- over time, waxing weakens the hair follicle, leading to less hair growth and finer texture.

  • No razon burn or cuts- because who wants to deal with irritated skin down there?

But to get the best results, proper prep and aftercare are key.

Pre-Wax Prep: Set Yourself Up for a Flawless Wax

  1. Hair Length Matters

For the smoothest, cleanest wax, your hair should be about the length of a grain of rice (1/4 inch)- not too short, not too long.

If some hairs are too short, the wax won't be able to grip them properly which means:

    - Some hairs won't lift (hello stragglers!)

    - You'll have pokey regrowth within days

    - Hairs might break off instead of being pulled from the root, leading to ingrown hairs.

Pro Tip: Most people need 7-10days of growth for the best results.

  2. Exfoliate & Moisturize (But Not Right Before)

Exfoliating 24-48 hours before your wax helps lift the hairs and remove dead skin buildup, allowing the wax to fully grip the hair. But timing is everything!

    - Use an exfoliating glove or gentle scrub.

    - Exfoliate against the hair growth to lift hair off the skin.

    - Moisturize after exfoliating to keep skin soft and prevent irritation.

Don't exfoliate the day of your wax! Freshy exfoliate skin = extra sensitivity.

  3. Time It Right

If you can, avoid waxing between ovulation and your period. Your skin is more sensitive during this time, making the wax way less pleasant. If you've ever thought, Why does my wax hurt more this time? this might be why.

Aftercare: Keeping That Peach Smooth & Bump-Free

This is where the magic happens! The first 48hours after your wax are crucial for preventing irritation and ingrown hairs.

  1. Hands Off!

I get it...you want to feel how smooth your skin is. But touching can introduce bacteria and cause breakouts. So resist the urge to check every five minutes!

And while we're on the subject of keeping hands off...lets talk about the other kind of friction...

No sexy time for 24-48 hours! I know, I know...freshly waxed skin is smooth, soft, and well...tempting. But trust me, your skin needs time to recover. Post-wax, your pores are open and extra sensitive, which means friction, sweat, and bacteria from skin to skin contact can lead to irritation, breakouts, and ingrown hairs (aka, not cute). Give it a day or two before getting back to business, your skin (and comfort level) will thank you!

  2. Exfoliate & Moisturize The key to preventing ingrown hairs? Keeping your skin soft, hydrated, and follicles open, so hairs can grow back properly instead of getting trapped under the skin. - Best exfoliation method? An exfoliating glove + your favorite intimate wash. - Best moisturizer? Cold pressed, unrefined coconut oil (it's natural, won't clog pores, and has antibacterial properties) Why coconut oil? Coconut oil isn't just a great moisturizer- its a game changer for post wax care.

    - Deeply nourishes: Coconut oil is packed with fatty acids that penetrate deep into the skin to restore hydration and repair the moisture barrier.

    - Locks in moisture: It also creates a protective layer that helps keep skin soft, smooth, and resilient against irritation. -Soothes and protects: Coconut oil naturally anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, so it calms redness, prevents infections, and keeps your freshly waxed skin happy. -Wont clog pores: unlike heavy lotions or synthetic oils, cold- pressed unrefined coconut oil absorbs easily without causing breakouts. Keeping your skin hydrated and protected after a wax makes all the difference; because smooth skin isn't just about hair removal, its about healthy skin too!
