Plot Twist: Your Clogged Skin Might Be Tired of Your Shit (and your acne facewash)

You know those hard little bumps under yo

ur skin that aren't really pimples?

You can feel them when you wash your face. Sometimes you can even pinch the skin around one and feel this tiny little marble buried underneath.

So obviously if you're like me, you've tried to squeeze it.

Nothing...

You've exfoliated it.

Still there.

You've put acne treatment on it because there is CLEARLY something clogged in there and it needs to GET OUT.

Except…it doesn't...It just lives there.

For approximately 900 years. And then every once in a while, one of those innocent little bumps decides today's the day, gets angry, turns red and becomes a giant breakout that takes another three weeks to completely disappear.

Meanwhile, somehow your skin is oily and dry.

Your forehead is shiny by 2 p.m., but after you wash your face your skin feels tight.

So naturally…

You reach for the acne wash.

Maybe yours is benzoyl peroxide. Maybe you've been using it since you were 17 because it was the first thing that finally got your acne under control.

Maybe every time you try to stop using it, you get a couple breakouts and immediately think NOPE. GIVE IT BACK.

Here's where I want you to consider something.

What if your acne wash is helping you control one skin problem…

while your skin has slowly developed a completely different one?

First, I'm not here to cancel benzoyl peroxide.

Benzoyl peroxide has a purpose.

It helps reduce acne-causing bacteria and can be incredibly useful for inflammatory acne (the red, swollen, angry kind.)

There are absolutely skins and seasons where I want it. But after spending a very long time with my hands on people's faces, I've learned to pay attention when the solution that once worked stops matching the skin sitting in front of me.

Skin changes. That's the truth.

And something your skin needed during one season of acne doesn't necessarily need to become part of its permanent personality. Especially if years later your skin isn't really covered in inflamed acne anymore.

Instead, now you're dealing with:

Hard little bumps.

Rough texture.

Congestion that never seems to move.

Breakouts that take forever to come to the surface.

Oily skin that somehow still feels dehydrated.

And every time that happens, you respond by trying to clear it with the same old stuff.

More acne wash.

Another acid.

More retinol.

A scrub.

A peel.

Anything that promises to unclog the pores.

And THAT is where I start getting interested. Because sometimes the problem isn't that your skin needs more help getting things off. Sometimes your skin has gotten really bad at letting things go.

Those little marbles actually have an explanation.

There's a process we see in acne-prone and congested skin called retention hyperkeratinization.

Very fancy name, pretty simple concept.

Your skin is constantly making new cells and shedding old ones. Inside the follicle, those cells should shed normally while oil moves up and out toward the surface. But sometimes those cells become sticky and start hanging around longer than they should. Instead of releasing normally, they accumulate with oil inside the follicle.

More sticks.

More accumulates.

And eventually you've got that little hard plug you can feel underneath your skin.

The marble.

And here's the frustrating part:

You can exfoliate the surface until you're blue in the face, but if that plug is buried deep inside a follicle, you're not going to scrub it out tonight.

Which is why you can have the SAME DAMN BUMP for what feels like months.

So how did your skin get here?

This is where things get a little more complicated than:

Benzoyl peroxide caused it. Because that's not really how skin works.

Benzoyl peroxide may be part of the problem for many people, especially when it's been used frequently on skin that's already dry, irritated or depleted.

But I see the same pattern in people who have spent years aggressively managing their skin in all kinds of ways.

Daily acids.

Too much retinol.

Harsh cleansers.

Constant exfoliation.

Scrubbing.

Peeling.

Stacking multiple active products because individually they're all supposed to be "good for acne."

And....sometimes simply never giving the skin enough nourishment to balance everything we're asking it to do.

Eventually you can end up with skin that's simultaneously congested and depleted.

And that's where people get trapped.

Because when your skin feels clogged…

you exfoliate.

It feels smoother for a minute.

Then the congestion comes back.

So you exfoliate more.

Meanwhile the skin starts feeling tighter and more reactive, but you're STILL getting bumps, so obviously you haven't exfoliated enough…

Right?

Not necessarily.

Sometimes you're trying to solve a skin-function problem by continually removing more skin.

This is where I change strategies.

When I see deeply congested skin that's also showing me signs of barrier depletion, I don't automatically think:

How aggressively can I exfoliate this?

Instead of immediately trying to force everything out, I start changing the environment those plugs are stuck inside.

We hydrate.

We nourish the barrier.

We calm unnecessary inflammation.

We strategically exfoliate rather than constantly exfoliate.

We work on getting the outer layers of the skin softer, healthier and more flexible.

Because I don't just want to remove today's clogged pore.

I want your skin to become better at releasing the next one before it becomes the same problem.

And we accomplish that bringing balance to your skin barrier before we ask it do the hard work of releasing years of congestion in your pore.

So if you've been touching your jaw this entire time…

Thinking:

OH MY GOD. SHE'S TALKING ABOUT MY SKIN.

I probably am. 😂

Especially if you've been treating acne forever but your biggest problem these days isn't necessarily raging acne.

It's congestion.

It's texture.

It's those stupid little hard bumps.

It's skin that somehow feels oily, dry, clogged and irritated all at the same time.

You may not need a stronger acne product.

You may need someone to look at your skin differently.

And this is exactly the kind of problem solving I love doing in my treatment room.
